With a fearful look, Hugo and Thaja crept along the side aisle of the old cathedral. The access to the underground crypt had to be at the rear of the ruin. At least that was how it had been explained to them.

In fact, the two found a half-buried passage that opened under the arch of a cellar vault, Hugo swallowed loudly and under the staring eyes of the countless gargoyles that were still crouching admonishingly on the walls of the ruin, the two set off into the underground to climb.

A piece of rubble loosened and tumbled noisily into the black depth. Thaja clung to Hugo’s upper arm in shock when suddenly one of the gargoyles seemed to lift itself into the air. But luckily it was only a pigeon that was startled by the noise in the twilight …

The four gargoyles are ideal for decorating church buildings, but they also cut a fine figure on the roofs of old villas and townhouses.
